Weather and climate of North Cyprus

North Cyprus has one of the most agreeable climates in Europe with brilliant sunshine for most of the year, low rainfall in the summer months and warm sea temperatures for visitors to enjoy at the height of the season.

The climate is sub-tropical with a dry summer season and cool, breezy winters. Summer begins in April when temperatures typically reach 23 degrees Celsius.

Spring Time

Spring is a perfect time for wildlife, including wild flowers, orchids, tulips and birds. In fact spring in North Cyprus is also one of the most exciting places to watch the spring bird migration. The island lies right across the migration route of birds flying north from sub-Saharan Africa.

Many visitors come specifically at this time of year to see the dramatic migration of flocks of heron flying directly over the sea, swifts and swallows low overhead and larks and wagtails flying in to stop off on their journey.

Summer Days

Summer days are long and hot, with temperatures inland reaching the high 30s and even 40s. At the coast pleasant sea breezes temper the heat and make temperatures more comfortable than inland. The hottest months are July and August when visitor numbers for family travellers to North Cyprus holidays are at their peak. This is perfect time for Al fresco dining and water sports in a social yet relaxed family environment.

It’s important to remember a few things to keep you safe in the sun: seek out shade in the middle of the day, wear a hat and sunglasses to protect from the strong rays, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Autumn & Winter

Autumn is warm and sunny and actually one of the most popular times to travel with September being the busiest month of the year for travellers. Even winter is mild in North Cyprus with temperatures of at least 20 so you can still sunbathe in winter in places like Kyrenia.  However, in the mountainous regions, like the Five Finger Mountains, temperatures can fall as it gets cooler with altitude.

Even though North Cyprus is most popular during the summer months there is plenty to do all year round with those who visit during the quieter periods of autumn and spring enjoying activities such as hiking, cycling and bird watching.
